“Rodney Carrington? Who’s that?”, responded one person when I told him that we were going to cover his act.
Another responded with, “My husband loves Rodney. He would die to go!”
Our limited knowledge of Rodney extends no further than his TV show, “Rodney”, which lasted two seasons. We loved that show. So when the opportunity to cover the act was available, I jumped at it.
This was going to be great! To see Rodney in person. Then some bad news came. As I was preparing for this act, a co-worker said, “Rodney is pretty vulgar!”. I said, nah. He can’t be that bad.
When Lori and I arrived at the Coeur d Alene Casino, we were quickly carted to the front entrance of the casino by golf cart.
It didn’t take long to find the event convention room and meet up with Mario and Yvette. These two are always very attentive and personable.
As fans started filling into the event center, on two large screens, outtakes of Rodney’s tv series were playing. The energy level was slowly mounting as people of all ages (above 18) and from all walks of life began finding seats.
Then the introduction of Rodney was announced. Rodney casually walked out on to stage and began with, “I don’t know what you all were thinking when you voted for that son of a b____ in office, because, when he is done with us, that’s all we are going to have is change!”. With a thunderous applause and whistles, the show began.
Rodney was very funny. If you could look past the swearing, the first half of the show was great with no crude humor. It wasn’t until the second half that the sexual and cruder humor began. I have to admit, I was not all that impressed with some of this.
The crowd absolutely loved him. It was a laugh a minute throughout the whole show. If you don’t mind crude humor and swearing, you’re good to go. If you loved Rodney because of his TV series, you may want to go by the two seasons on DVD.
